Definition
HDI is an average measure of basic human capacities as well as a brief measure of human development by means of social and economic development. HDI measures a country’s average achievements in four areas. These are years of schooling, expected years of schooling, life expectancy at birth, and gross national income per capita. This practical instrument monitors and compares the development of countries over time (Investopedia 2019).
Introduction
Economists have long considered the Gross National Product (GNP) per capita as a core variable to measure and explain the economic development of a country. GNP per capita fails to capture developmental progress and dimensions of human welfare – in particular the living standard, health, schooling, life expectancy, etc. An alternative measure has been provided by the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) in its Human Development Report(HDR) based on the “Human Development Index”...
