Synonyms

Highland dome; Steep-sided dome (Moon)

Definition

Volcanic edifice on the Moon consisting of nonmare material (Wilson and Head 2003).

Category

A type of dome on the Moon.

Description

Formation by nonmare volcanism, different from both mare and highland with respect to their morphologic and spectral properties (Wagner et al. 2002). Their albedos are high, and they appear spectrally red (Head and McCord 1978; Wagner et al. 2002). Some have larger diameters and most have steeper slopes than mare domes (Head and Gifford 1980; Braden et al. 2010).

Morphometry

They have average flank slopes (measured from the dome center to its rim) of more than 10° (Lena et al. 2013). They are higher (from about 500 up to 2,000 m) than mare domes (Wilson and Head 2003; Braden et al. 2010; Lena et al. 2013), and locally the topographic slopes on their flanks may reach values of 22–27° (Tran et al. 2011).

Formation

They may have formed in part by dikes with estimated widths of a few hundreds of...
