Definition

A consolidated aeolian bedform.

Synonyms

Cemented dune; Consolidated dune; Fossilized dune; Lithified dune; Semi-lithified dune

Description

Features suggestive of dune induration on Mars include craters superposed on dunes, spatially superposed or adjacent dune patterns that form under different wind regimes, arcuate ridges that indicate former dune positions, protruding cemented layers, distorted dune shapes, absence of dry grain flow on avalanche faces, avalanche remnants in interdune areas (Feldman et al. 2008), slumps, yardangs, thick dust coverings, avalanche chutes, crusted dune surface, and surface cracks (Schatz et al. 2006).

Interpretation

Lack of movement of migrating dunes (e.g., barchans) indicates inactive dunes, but dune inactivity does not necessarily indicate induration. They may be reactivated when conditions change. Dunes may be inactive due to dust mantling (Edgett and Malin 2000) or inappropriate aeolian conditions in addition to induration.
