Testing: High-Resolution Chest Computed Tomography Scan

High-resolution computed tomography (HRCT) chest scan is a powerful diagnostic tool for the evaluation of lung parenchyma. It can identify a wide array of findings that cannot be found with standard chest radiography or conventional helical CT scans. HRCT utilizes a high spatial frequency algorithm (bone) and thin 1 mm collimation, allowing for visualization of secondary pulmonary lobules and often interlobar fissures (Stark 2013).
The clinical indications for HRCT include the following: to aid with diagnosis in patients with nonspecific radiographic abnormalities, to confirm/exclude diffuse pulmonary disease in patients with functional abnormalities or normal/equivocal findings on other radiographic studies, and to potentially determine disease prognosis.
