Epidemiological Evaluation of the Effectiveness and Impact of Malaria Vector Control Interventions

Definition

Malaria vector control interventions are intended to reduce contact between disease vectors (Anopheles mosquitoes) and human beings, or lessen the overall abundance of disease vectors, or reduce the life span of insect vectors thereby preventing them from becoming infective. Before new vector control interventions can be recommended for public health use, effectiveness in protecting against malaria infection or disease or mortality has to be demonstrated in human populations who receive the intervention, compared to those who do not. Guidelines are being established to determine the level and type of evidence of effectiveness that has to be shown for new classes of vector control tools before they can be endorsed by WHO.
