Definition
Heat shock proteins (HSPs) play a role in protecting other cellular proteins from the deleterious effects of stress and were originally identified as proteins that were expressed (induced) under heat shock conditions. However, many HSPs are now known to also be expressed under normal conditions (constitutive) and may or may not exhibit increased levels under stress. Many HSPs are molecular chaperones which facilitate the following cellular processes: correct folding and assembly of other proteins, intracellular protein transport, and protein degradation. While molecular chaperones regulate the conformational state of other proteins, they do not provide a structural blueprint and are catalytic in their action, not forming part of the final folded protein or complex.
