Cognitive Strategic Groups

Categorization theories:

Theories in cognitive psychology relating to categories of concepts and the hierarchical relationships among them (Reger and Huff 1993).

Cognitive strategic group:

Groups of firms in an industry whose managers hold similar mental representations about industry and strategy. These cognitively constructed mental representations need not be based entirely on observable characteristics.

Strategic group:

A group of competing organizations with similar observable characteristics. An industry may have multiple distinct strategic groups.

Taxonomic mental model:

A mental representation based on a cognitive taxonomy. Elements are grouped into classes that are then grouped into more abstract categories, until a very generic “root node” is established at the most general level of classification (Porac and Thomas 1990).
