Groups of firms in an industry whose managers hold similar mental representations about industry and strategy. These cognitively constructed mental representations need not be based entirely on observable characteristics.

A group of competing organizations with similar observable characteristics. An industry may have multiple distinct strategic groups.
- Taxonomic mental model:

A mental representation based on a cognitive taxonomy. Elements are grouped into classes that are then grouped into more abstract categories, until a very generic “root node” is established at the most general level of classification (Porac and Thomas 1990).
