Abstract

Gun violence is a substantial threat to global public health and safety. Each year, about 250,000 people in the world die from injuries inflicted with firearms, excluding those occurring in the context of conflict and terrorism. Many more individuals sustain nonfatal but life-altering firearm injuries or are exposed to the trauma caused by the use of firearms. Firearm injuries also exert a heavy toll on national economies. Different forms of firearm-related harm have multiple and distinct causes and consequences that span historical and developmental time and ecological levels. These can be categorized according to several dimensions, including the person or group causing or experiencing the harm (e.g., self-directed, inter-personal), nature of acts (e.g., physical force, threats), and manner (e.g., intentional, unintentional). This inaugural chapter on gun violence epidemiology provides an overview of the epidemiology of firearm-related harm in terms of scope and burden. Additionally, it uses the organizing framework of social ecological model to explain the determinants, consequences, and prevention of gun violence. Methodological considerations, legal, political, and ethical issues, are presented, and future directions and specific contributions of the field of epidemiology to gun violence prevention are proposed.
