Danish scientist, Jeans C. Skou, was the first who suggested a link between transport of sodium (Na +) and potassium (K +) across the plasma membrane and adenosine-triphosphatase (ATPase) activity in 1950s. For the discovery of the Na +/K +-ATPase, Jeans C. Skou was awarded by the Nobel Prize in Chemistry in 1997. This discovery was important for understanding the reaction of excitable cells (nervous cells) to the stimuli and transmission of impulses. The Na +/K +-ATPase is a membrane protein and has a role in the active transport of Na + and K + ions across the plasma membrane. For this transport, Na +/K +-ATPase uses the energy derived from the process of hydrolysis of the terminal phosphate bond of ATP. During this process, the acyl phosphate forms as intermediate.
