Self-understanding or self-perception is the ability to understand and reflect upon one’s competency to perform in the world (Harter 2012). It has been established that young children overestimate their competencies (Bjorklund and Green 1992) and that this overestimation can lead to a sense of self-efficacy (Bandura 1991).
