Definition
The Autism Spectrum Disorder Care Pathway (ASD-CP) was designed to address the challenges associated with providing care to youth with ASD psychiatrically hospitalized in nonspecialized settings. The ASD-CP, first implemented in July 2015 in a public hospital, consists of a modular staff training, a set of behavioral intervention strategies focused on prevention and management of challenging behaviors (CBs), and a toolkit to aid in staff implementation of strategies. Data collected in 3 years since its inception suggests that the ASD-CP is associated with significant reductions in the use of crisis interventions in patients with ASD.
Historical Background
Youth with ASD are psychiatrically hospitalized at elevated rates compared to age-matched peers.
