Definitions
After it has been determined that a child qualifies for special education services, an Individualized Educational Program (IEP) is developed by the school with input from parents. The IEP is a written legal document that includes goals, the method for obtaining these goals, and a measurement plan. The term “social” is individually defined depending on the particular IEP goal of the child. For example, for some children appropriately taking turns during a simple activity is a social goal. For others, engaging in appropriate reciprocal verbal conversation is a social goal. Inclusive settings are community environments that have a natural proportion of children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or other disability and typically developing peers.
