Definition
The Emotion Awareness and Skills Enhancement (EASE) Program is an individual therapy intervention that was designed to improve emotion regulation skills and overall well-being in adolescents and adults with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) without intellectual disability.
Historical Background
Many people with ASD have interfering problems with emotional and behavioral control that lead to the use of psychiatric services including therapy, medications, and even inpatient hospitalization. Intense and sudden negative reactions, anxiety and worry, aggression and hostility, and persistently high negative affect are some examples of these emotional and behavioral problems, which are unfortunately very common in ASD, substantially impede capacity to learn and function across all life settings, and affect quality of life for the affected individual and family members.
