Definition

A social network (SN) is defined as a tuple <V, E>, where:

  • V – is a nonempty set of actors representing social entities: humans, organizations, departments, etc.; called also vertices, nodes, members, cases, agents, instances, or points.

  • E – is a set of directed edges (relations between actors called also arcs, connections, or ties) where a single edge is represented by a tuple <x, y>, x, yV, xy and for two edges <x, y> and <x′, y′> if <x, y> ≠ <x′, y′> and x = x′ then yy′. Note that <x, y> ≠ <y, x> because we consider here directed social networks.

Since social networks usually represent one kind of relationships, they are also called singlelayered social network SSN (Magnani and Rossi 2011) (also to distinguish it from a multilayered social...
