Abstract
Some people with autism spectrum disorder will enter adulthood without being properly diagnosed, sometimes because of high intelligence and good coping strategies, sometimes because the disorder was concealed by, or even mistaken for, another psychiatric disorder. In the diagnostic assessment, rating scales and structured instrument can assist the clinician in the investigation. However, only a few instruments available today were originally developed for adults; most of them were tailored for assessing children. This chapter describes instruments that can be useful in the diagnostic assessment of adults and obstacles that the clinician can encounter in this undertaking.
