Abstract

Large artery thromboembolic occlusion, cardioembolism, and lacunes account for the majority of ischemic strokes. Compromise of blood flow and energy supply to the brain actuates several mechanisms contributing to cell death including inflammation, apoptosis, excitotoxicity and ionic imbalance, oxidative stress, and peri-infarct depolarization [1].
