During his 33 years as an astronomer at the Nice Observatory, Stéphane Javelle discovered nearly 2,000 nebulae and recovered six periodic comets. Javelle took an active part in the measurement of the speed of light as well as in the Eros solar parallax campaign undertaken by Henri Perrotin , the first director of the Nice Observatory.
In 1883 Javelle took his baccalaureate in Lyon, where his father manufactured furniture and his mother was a seamstress. Javelle was employed as an accountant by a Lyon industrialist who happened to be a friend of the astronomer Louis Thollon . At the time Thollon had just finished the construction of a large spectroscope with which he planned to study the Sun’s spectrum at the Nice Observatory, a private institution owned by financier Raphaël Louis Bischoffsheim.
