Definition

Positive autoregulation (PAR) occurs when a transcription factor enhances its own rate of production. As effects of PAR, response times are slowed and variation is usually enhanced. In the case of a strong PAR the motif may lead to bimodal distribution of protein levels in cell populations (Alon 2006, 2007).
