Definition

A segment of DNA usually occurring upstream from a gene and facilitating the transcription initiation of that gene. Promoters usually contain binding sites for RNA polymerase, general transcription factors, and specific transcription factors and other regulatory elements. In prokaryotes, the sequence of a promoter is recognized by the sigma (s) factor of the RNA polymerase. In eukaryotes, it is recognized by specific transcription factors.
