Definition

Immunoinformatics is the science that studies immunogenetics and immunology data using bioinformatics and computational approaches.

Immunoinformatics is crucial for understanding the immune response, particularly the adaptive immune response of vertebrates. Implementation of specific databases and tools (Flower 2007; Lefranc 2008; Schoenbach et al. 2008), creation of the IMGT® information system in 1989, and development of IMGT-ONTOLOGY, the global reference in immunogenetics and immunoinformatics (Giudicelli and Lefranc 1999; Lefranc et al. 2004, 2005, 2008; Duroux et al. 2008), built by IMGT®, the international ImMunoGeneTics information system® (http://www.imgt.org) (IMGT® Information System), have contributed to the coming of age of immunoinformatics.
