Definition

Very large, barrel-shaped, multimeric proteolytic complexes, present in both the nucleus and the cytoplasm, involved in the degradation of multiple ubiquitin-conjugated proteins, that play important roles in cell cycle regulation, cellular differentiation, and other processes that require protein degradation.
