Pattern recognition receptors (PRR) are proteins that scan the host tissues for nonself-entities such as invading microbes or altered/damaged host-tissue. PRRs recognize molecular patterns present on the surface of microbes or damaged/altered tissue. The recognition induces a series of protective immune processes.

Pattern recognition receptor (PRR) is a superfamily of proteins that scans the host tissues for nonself-entities such as microbes or damaged tissue. The distinction between self and nonself is based on specific molecular patterns present on the surface or secreted by the foreign entities.
