The nature and history of adolescent rights in international human rights law are linked inextricably to the rise of children’s rights in that context. Although numerous international documents include children (or at least do not explicitly exclude them), the international children’s rights movement is understandable by taking a close look at three major documents meant to delineate closely the rights of children. This essay focuses on those documents to highlight the nature of children’s human rights and their potential relevance to adolescents.

When the League of Nations (1924) adopted the Declaration of Geneva, children’s rights made their first formal appearance in the international scene.
