This encyclopedia is primarily concerned with exploring different aspects of the study of adolescence as a distinct developmental phase. This specific focus is an endeavor that is strongly associated with the field of developmental psychology and, according to Arnett (2007, p. vii), is also “a predominantly American enterprise.” Yet researchers interested in the broad study of young people’s lives are to be found globally and across all social science disciplines and fields of study, albeit often working with very different concepts, theoretical frameworks, and methodologies to those most familiar to developmental psychologists. The purpose of this essay – written by a British sociologist – is to introduce readers to a range of parallel social scientific approaches to studying young people’s lives, including those which exist in other disciplines and/or outside of the USA.
