Definition

Developmental cognitive neuroscience is a multidimensional and interdisciplinary field that attempts to explain how cognitive development is supported by changes in underlying brain structure and function, and how brain organization changes over developmental time (Johnson 2011). Developmental cognitive neuroscience lies at the intersection of multiple fields including brain imaging, electrophysiology, neurogenetics, computational modeling of development, and comparative research with nonhuman primates. Neuroscience provides a means by which to constrain our understanding of cognitive development and learning to biologically plausible mechanisms. Developmental cognitive neuroscience will help determine the neurobiological processes of learning and development, and the mechanisms that support changes (neuronal plasticity) in brain function and structure over time.
