Introduction
Geographical Setting
The Crimean peninsula (Fig. 1) is located in the southeastern corner of the European continent, on the northern coast of the Black Sea in southern Ukraine. Moreover, except during the Last Interglacial period (c. 128–116 year BP, MIS 5e) when Crimea was an island, present-day Crimea was not a peninsula but rather the southernmost edge of a continuous land belt from the Eastern Balkans to Northwestern Caucasus in Eastern Europe during most of the Upper Pleistocene. Occupying such a transitional geographical position between different European and Asian regions, Crimea is quite important for Western Eurasian Paleolithic studies.
