Founded in 1994, this is the leading referred journal in international heritage studies. Published as seven issues a year, by Routledge, the International Journal of Heritage Studies (IJHS) includes original research articles, review articles, short reports or discussion pieces, and book reviews. The remit of the journal is to encourage the development of heritage studies as both an area of academic enquiry and as an area of public policy and practice.
Heritage studies became a recognizable area of academic enquiry during the 1980s. The study of heritage was itself initiated by the surge of national and international policies and legal instruments that were enacted around the globe during the 1960s and 1970s in an attempt to conserve and protect the built environment, archaeological sites, artistic works, and significant material culture as heritage.
