American psychologist. Born in Unionville, Missouri, June 23, 1907. Studied at the University of Missouri, Columbia, B.A. 1929; Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Ph.D. 1932. Served as a clinical psychologist. Office of Strategic Services, 1944–1945. Married Willa Mae Cook in 1931; three children. National Research Council Fellow, Northwestern University, Evanston, Illinois, 1932–1933, and Princeton University, New Jersey, 1933–34; Sterling Fellow, 1934–1936, and Instructor in Psychology and Member of Research Staff, Institute of Human Relations, Yale University, New Haven, Connecticut, 1936–1940; Assistant Professor, 1940–1943, and Associate Professor, 1943–1948, Harvard University, Cambridge, Massachusetts; Research Professor, 1948–1975, and since 1975 Professor Emeritus, University of Illinois, Urbana.
