Introduction
The coastline of French Guiana extends along the Atlantic Ocean between Brazil and Surinam for 370 km. It is a landscape of mangroves and salt marshes, broken here and there by outcrops of Pre-Cambrian crystalline basement (Fig. 4.7.1 ).
