This is a foundation concept in African indigenous relational ethics. It is refers to a belief among peoples in Africa that humans are made persons because of, and through, other persons. That is, that we are who we are through the support and mentorship of others. In this perspective, progress in our lives is influenced by the operation of the principle of mutuality of obligation and care between the individual and the community.
