A state of being receptive to stimuli for differentiation. It may depend on specific transcription factors, presence of the right signaling molecules, absence of interfering signals, presence of the appropriate receptors and ligands, modifying factors such as kinases, phosphatases, availability of the proper environmental cues, etc., and their complex interactions. (See Duranthon V, Renard JP 2001 Theriogenology 55:1277).
