An unsaturated fatty acid, which, is known as arachidonate when there are four double bonds in the molecule (it is synonymous with eicosatetraenoate). It occurs in lipids and plays a role in mediating signal transduction. Cyclooxygenase mediates the formation of prostaglandins, prostacyclins and thromboxanes whereas lipoxygenase catalyzes the synthesis of leukotrienes from arachidonic acid. fatty acids, cyclooxygenase, lipoxygenase signal transduction, atherosclerosis
