Longitudinal muscles located dorsally in insect thoracic segments that power the downstroke of wings during insect flight. These are indirect flight muscles and are not attached to the wings. They are attached to apodemes at the anterior and posterior of the meso- and metathorax. When contracted, the dorsal longitudinal muscles slightly arch the thorax, causing he wings to move downward.
