The employment of labor and care upon the soil in order to raise a crop. A synonym is soil husbandry. The beginning of the cultivation of soil is the principal characteristic that marks the Neolithic period of human prehistory. In leading to accelerated deforestation, it is implicated in the rise of CO 2 in the atmosphere (Ruddiman, 2005).
