Rudolf Richter (Figure S20(A)) was born on November 7, 1881 at Glatz in Silesia and studied at the Universities of Munich and Marburg. Richter worked under the tutelage of Emanuel Kayser and completed his doctorate at Marburg in 1909, his doctoral dissertation was published under the title “Beitraege zur Kenntnis devonischer Trilobiten aus dem Rheinischen Schiefergebirge” (Contributions to the knowledge of Devonian trilobites from the Rheinische Schiefergebirge). Richter is generally regarded as having been one of the most influential geologists of his time, his influence reaching far beyond the boundaries of Germany. Biographical works include Stubblefield (1957), Kegel (1957), Schmidt (1982), and Burghard Flemming (personal communication) provided insights on both Richter and the Senckenberg Laboratory.
