Glossary

Average recurrence interval (ARI) or return period:

The size of flood that on average occurs once every return period in years (or ARI).

Best management practice (BMP):

The best practicable method of achieving water quality management objectives, similar to treatment measure.

Design flow:

Similar to treatable flow rate.

Event mean concentration (EMC):

The event mean concentration (EMC) is derived from a number of rainfall events. For each rainfall event, the average pollutant concentration is determined based on measurement of pollutant concentration over the rainfall event. The mean of all these event-based average pollutant concentration values is the event mean concentration or EMC.

High rate treatment:

Treating stormwater at a high discharge rate.

Inline system:

A treatment system that is part of the main drainage system and treats all flows passing through it.
