Abstract
Count Giacomo Leopardi, son of Monaldo Leopardi and of Adelaide Antici, was a great Italian poet. Nonetheless, he wrote three significant works on the history of astronomy and popular science, although none was published until after his death. Storia dell’Astronomia dalla sua origine all’anno MDCCCXI (History of Astronomy from its Origin until 1811), while composed in 1813, was not published until 1878–1880; see Felici 1992: 748. Dissertazione sopra l’origine e i primi progressi dell’Astronomia (Essay on the Origin and the First Progresses of Astronomy), composed in 1814, was only published in 1906; see Felici 1992: 862. Saggio sopra gli errori popolari degli antichi (Essay on the Popular Mistakes of the Ancients), composed in 1815, was published in 1846; see Felici 1992: 872.
