Introduction

The International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement incorporates the International Committee for the Red Cross (ICRC) and the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies as well as the 186 national Red Cross and Red Crescent societies with 97 million volunteers, staff, and supporters.

Brief History

The idea for the Movement came about as a result of a bloody battle, the Battle of Solferino, Italy in 1859. In 1863, the international committee for the relief of military wounded was established and, in 1876 was renamed the International Committee for the Red Cross.
