Basic Biographical Information
Charles S. Mott was born in 1875 in Newark, New Jersey and throughout his lifetime would become known as an industrialist, mayor, and philanthropist. Mott was born into a line of entrepreneurs, as his grandfather – Samuel R. Mott – founded the cider and vinegar company that would become Motts, Inc. (famous for its applesauce). After studying engineering in college, Mott went to work for his father and uncle who had purchased a bicycle wheel manufacturing business (Weston-Mott Company). After his father died, Mott’s uncle appointed him superintendent of the company.
In 1906, Mott moved to Flint, Michigan after his company merged with Buick Motor Company. Two years later, the company was purchased by General Motors Corporation, and Mott served on the GM board of directors until his death. He was also vice president of GM from 1916 to 1937. By 1942, Mott was the corporation’s largest shareholder.
