Basic Biographical Information
The man who would be known as Coluche was born Michel Colucci in 1944 in Paris to a working class family of Italian immigrants. School did not spark Coluche’s passion, and he left with only the basic certificate in 1958. He later entered the army, but was released in 1965. He then worked as a florist and began singing on café terraces and in cabarets, where he took on his stage name, Coluche. Along with several colleagues, Coluche participated in the creation of the first theater-café, le Café de la Gare. Their unusual, irreverent style brought him and the troupe notoriety. From his very modest beginnings, Coluche became a popular comedian and actor – as well as a political figure – well known for a style of humor that brought political and social ills to the fore and touched his audiences. Coluche died in 1986 in a motorcycle accident.
