Compression packing is a ring of deformable material, used as a set of rings, mechanically loaded to form a seal to limit leakage along a rotating shaft. Sealing takes place in a cylindrical plane parallel to the shaft.
Introduction
Shaft sealing represents a unique branch of the science of tribology. The liquid being sealed becomes the lubricant for the seal. In the case of compression packing, sealing is achieved in a cylindrical plane parallel to the shaft. The length of the sealing plane is determined by the number of packing rings used. Compression packing must be mechanically loaded in the axial direction that is opposed to the pressure within the equipment. Compression of the packing forces the packing to the shaft and bore of the equipment creating the seal. As the shaft rotates, frictional heat will be generated. This heat must be removed by a small amount of leakage between the packing and shaft. This leakage will cool...
