Definition

Hard graphite-like carbon (GLC) coatings are a class of amorphous carbon coatings predominantly composed of a graphite-like microstructure (sp2 hybridized carbon). GLCs possess high hardness and provide unique performance in applications such as protective and lubricating surfaces of mechanical components.

Scientific Fundamentals

The Hard Graphite-Like Carbon Coating

Carbon is one of the most amazing elements on earth. It can exist in three bonding types: sp1, sp2, and sp3 (Chu et al. 2006). In the sp1 configuration, a carbon atom forms two sp orbitals and thus two σ bonds. The other valence electrons constitute two perpendicular π orbitals. In the sp2 configuration, a carbon atom makes three sp2 orbitals, forming three σ bonds; the remaining p orbital forms a π bond. In the sp3 configuration, a carbon atom forms four sp3orbitals, which make a strong σ bond to an adjacent atom. The natures of these bonds result in the varied attractive chemical properties and physical...
