Definition
Vasculitis is a pathological process defined by leukocyte invasion and fibrinoid necrosis of the vessel wall. Any size vessel can be affected, and vasculitis may be associated with thrombotic occlusion, stenosis, or aneurysmal dilatation of the blood vessel.
Introduction
Systemic vasculitis occurs either as a primary autoimmune disorder or as a secondary manifestation of another disease process (Tables 1 and 2). Primary systemic vasculitis is classified according to the predominant size of vessel involved and the presence of circulating antineutrophil cytoplasmic autoantibodies (ANCA) (Fig. 1) (Jennette 2011; Watts et al. 2011). Small vessel vasculitides, especially those associated with ANCA, often involve the kidneys. Less commonly, large vessel vasculitides such as polyarteritis nodosa and Takayasu arteritis can involve the kidneys.
