Membership

The International Neuropsychological Symposium consists primarily of neurologists, psychiatrists, neuropsychologists, and individuals in related areas. Membership is by invitation only and the majority of its members are Europeans. At its outset, the group was very small, consisting of a handful of influential clinicians and scientists, and for many years, its membership was fewer than 40 individuals. As of 1998 (date of the last available figure), the organization had 111 members.

Mission Statement

The purpose of the International Neuropsychological Symposium is to promote knowledge and understanding of brain functions and related issues at the intersection of neurology, psychology, and psychiatry.

Landmark Contributions

Oliver Zangwill (1984) credits Henry Hécaen with the idea of forming this international group in the summer of 1949 while the two scholars were at a dinner party at Hécaen’s Paris home. Hécaen had previously discussed the idea informally with his friend...
