Binds to benzodiazepine receptors at the GABA-A ligand-gated chloride channel. Inhibitor effects in sleep centers of the brain theoretically produce sedative effects.

Indication

Short-term treatment of insomnia.

Off Label Use

No common other use.

Side Effects

Serious

Respiratory depression, rare hepatic and/or renal dysfunction; blood dyscrasia.

Common

Sedation, fatigue, memory problems, dizziness, slurred speech, disinhibition, anxiety, and rebound insomnia.
