Definition

According to the Federal Office of Special Education and Rehabilitative Services, other health impairment (Sec. 300.8(c)(9)) is a term used to describe acute or chronic health conditions, including but not limited to heart conditions, tuberculosis, rheumatic fever, nephritis, asthma, sickle-cell anemia, hemophilia, epilepsy, lead poisoning, leukemia, diabetes, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, heightened alertness to environmental stimuli, and Tourette syndrome, which adversely affects a child’s educational performance (http://idea.ed.gov/explore/search; http://nichcy.org/Disabilities/Categories). The Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) is the primary federal program that authorizes state and local aid for special education and related services for children with disabilities (http://idea.ed.gov/).
