Definition

A finger vein reader is a biometric device that comprises at least one optical imaging unit designed to capture finger vein patterns of an individual and a digital signal processor that digitizes the captured finger vein patterns to be utilized as biometric features.

Introduction

Unlike conventional biometric features such as finger print, vascular network patterns cannot be observed without using specially designed equipment and thus, it is extremely difficult to steal or duplicate the biometric information. The possibility of biometric identification based on human finger vein patterns captured by transmitting light was indicated by Shimizu in 1992 [1]. However, it was not until Kono et al. developed a near-infrared finger vein reader prototype and demonstrated its effectiveness in 2000 that the concept became reality [2].
