n. Thick, mastic-like materials which absorb heat; they are designed to char and sacrifice themselves while protecting the metal substrate underneath. This type of coating is similar with Intumescent coatings that produce foam on exposure to high heat to protect the substrate, but do not char as ablative coatings. These coatings are used for missiles and re-entry rockets.
