Enzyme that catalyzes the conversion of arachidonic acid to prostaglandin H2.

Cyclooxygenase is a membrane-bound enzyme that exists as two isozymes; cyclooxygenase-1 and cyclooxygenase-2. It catalyzes a two step reaction that converts arachidonic acid to the dioxygenated prostanoid, prostaglandin G2. The peroxidase function of cyclooxygenase converts prostaglandin G2 to prostaglandin H2. The enzyme is the rate limiting step in the formation of prostaglandins from arachidonic acid. Cyclooxygenase is inhibited by the non-steroidal antiinflammatory class of drugs (e.g. ibuprofen).
