A family of hormone-like compounds formed by hydroxylation of 20-carbon polyunsaturated fatty acids, chiefly arachidonic acid including the prostaglandins, thromboxanes, hydroxy-eicosatetraeonic acids (HETEs), and leukotrienes. Eicosanoids act rapidly and locally to regulate inflammation, lymphocyte function, chemotaxis, blood pressure, pain, and blood clotting.
